Age of Conan dev: Gamers tired of Warcraft
------------------------------------------------------------------
Quest designer says there is a "feeling on the Internet" that WoW is
losing its appeal.
Gamers are getting tired of World of Warcraft, according to the
developer of upcoming fantasy MMO Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures.
Speaking in an interview with VideoGamer.com, quest designer Joel Bylos
said that while "everybody working in the industry respects WoW", there
is a "feeling on the Internet" that it is losing its lustre.
Blizzard's World of Warcraft has proved to be a gaming phenomenon since
its release in November 2004 and currently enjoys 9.3 million active
subscribers across the globe.
When asked whether he thought people were getting tired of WoW and might
be looking for something different, Bylos said: "Yeah. There's
definitely that feeling on the Internet. You get that just from online
communities, which of course we all pay attention to as well."
He added: "But I think one mistake a lot of people make is they design a
game to be WoW and WoW was successful on its own two legs and that's
what Conan is going to do."
AoC is a violent fantasy MMO set in the universe of Conan the Barbarian
and is scheduled for a March 2008 release on PC and sometime after that
for Xbox 360.

"feeling on the internet"... I guess it's a way of saying "We want to make
people believe that WoW is dying so that they'll come and play *our* game
instead, but we don't have any evidence to support it. I suppose we could
run a poll, but we might not get a result that we like..."

Gamers might be surprised to hear that.

Yep. And the new Lich King expansion won't help a bit:)

There's that "feeling on the internet" again.

Having said all that, I'll definitely have a look at it... It'd be stupid
not to.

Let's not forget the Oblivion-esque system requirements need to play
AoC.
Warcraft is also very popular because you don't need a suped-up
machine to play it.
AoC not only has to fight against WOW, it also has to fight against
that Pirates of the Burning Seas MMO as well as the other supposed
"wow killer" with the orcs/elves in it (forget the name). >> Stay informed about: Age of Conan dev: Gamers tired of Warcraft...? |

Exactly.
I think there ARE several people in the hardcore gaming community,
who are getting a little tired of playing WoW, but that leaves a
few importaint points open:
1. Those people have had tons of other great games all along, which
they probably also do play, and yet they still keep an account in WoW.
2. Those people are in fact a minority among the 9.3 million
subscribers. WoW did not build it's enormous fanbase on gamers
alone. There is a significant portion of very casual players,
who are not likely to jump ship because of a new game, once they
have buried themselves in WoW. To them, the huge investment of time
is not something that you simply leave behind, unlike the gamers.
3. The people willing to jump are an outspoken bunch, thereby
making up a lot of the clatter, but remaining a small minority.
WoW is here to stay. To a huge portion of players, the sentimental
attachment is too great.
And then there are also the many people who simply do not agree
with the statement, and are still perfectly happy with WoW.

Consoles are where the market is. It dwarfs the PC game market.
(I play on PCs, not consoles, so it's not like I like that fact.)

Which is exactly my point. Every game will be touted as a killer of
another game. Games eventually die on their own anyway, and its
really just coincidence when a game death coincides with the release
of a game touted as its killer. >> Stay informed about: Age of Conan dev: Gamers tired of Warcraft...? |

I wouldn't say it's *entirely* a co-incidence. After all, it's no
co=incidence that the camel's back broke right after you added that
last piece of straw. ; )
But considering people are going to be calling pretty much *every* new
game, the "killer" game, they've pretty much going to have to get it
right eventually. ; )

Its my belief that games die out on their own. If people weren't
already bored with playing them, they wouldn't be looking at the next
big game coming out. I have no intent on playing AoC, I'm still
having fun playing WoW. But I'm sure there are lots of people out
there getting a little tired of WoW, or just need something to pass
the time until WotLK, and those will be the people to play AoC. Them,
and of course, all the people who just got banned for botting. >> Stay informed about: Age of Conan dev: Gamers tired of Warcraft...? |
