I'm aware of three adventure games on the 8-bit NES -- Shadowgate, Princess
Tomato in the Salad Kingdom (or something like that -- very interesting,
unusual game), and Unforgiven (or Unforgotten... I forget which). Does
anyone know of other games like this on NES?

The one I played was Deja Vu, interesting detective/mystery game. I
think the other one you're thinking of is Uninvited. You may have some
success checking out gamespot.com/nes and looking for similar genre or
related games.

I didn't realize Deja Vu was released on NES, but I played the GBC version.
And yeah, it's "Uninvited" I was thinking of.

I think everybody should play Princess Tomato. It's trippy, but fun.

There's Deja Vu, by the same peopl who did Shadowgate (and I think
Unforgiven). It's a creepy detective game; I never finished it, but I
keep meaning to go back. (I still have the rom, I think, if you want
it.)

There's also Maniac Mansion, which I'm sure you're aware of. But that
exhausts my knowledge.

Best,
James

Oh yeah -- I forgot about Maniac Mansion. It had walking characters, which
is probably why it slipped my mind. I was thinking of the ones with still
scenes. But it definitely counts.

I had Deja Vu 1 and 2 on the Gameboy Color a few years ago. I'm not sure I
finished either of them, but they were fun. I guess I didn't realize they
were ports of NES games. Was Deja Vu 2 ever on the NES, or just the first
one?

And I looked it up -- the one game is called "Uninvited". I always get that
wrong. Smile

That very well might be all of them. That's 5 or 6. That ain't bad. Just
curious. Smile

Yes, Deja Vu 2 was available for the NES; I've seen it, though I haven't
played it.

Something tells me that there's at *least* one other such game out there
which I'm not remembering...

There's Tombs and Treasures, an NES adventure with an archaeological
theme. You might also try Nightshade, which has a 1930's pulp noir feel
to it. It has some action elements in it, but it's an adventure game at
heart.

The best "Complete List" I can name:

Deja Vu
King's Quest V
Maniac Mansion
Nightshade
Shadowgate
Tombs and Treasures
Uninvited

And I admit, I can't be positive I've covered everything. I've never
played Princess Tomato.

It was very trippy. Part of that may be due to the storage constraints,
though. There is one spot where you return to the area played at the
beginning, and attempting to return to an earlier location actually says
something like "there isn't enough memory." Messages are very short, like
they were hitting the boundaries of what the NES cart could store. It's a
little different from the Shadowgate-style of play, because you don't get a
pointer for picking things on the room graphic. The left and right sides are
the commands (look, check, take, talk, etc), and additional options appear
at the bottom (pick what you want to look at, check, take, etc). This makes
the game *easier* than Shadowgate (which I never even finished), but it's
still pretty fun.

But it was trippy.

Hrm.

While Sweet Home is technically a top-down RPG, with an RPG
combat-system, it's in many ways closer to an adventure game... you
have five people trapped in a haunted house, each one with their own
special item (e.g. a lighter, a vacuum cleaner, a key) that has to be
used to solve puzzles, along with several other items you find along
the way. Ultimately, of course, your goal is to escape.

Dizzy's Adventure is a sort of sidescrolling adventure game, too.

There were also many, many more Shadowgate style adventure-type games
for the Fanticom Disk System, which most modern NES emulators will
handle.

Not to hijack this topic, but in case anyone cares the NES was not the
only console to have adventure games:

Scooby Doo Mystery for the Sega Genesis was an adventure game too (the
SNES version wasn't, though).

Dracula - The Undead (for Atari Lynx) as well. It's been a while since I
played it, and I didn't get far. I still have two working Lynx systems,
though, so maybe some day...
