3.0, the hype started about a year before release. And they gave good,
useful information about it (in Dragon, at least).
3.5, IIRC it was months rather than a year. ISTR hearing about it in
late fall 2002, while working with the PCGen project, and they would've
been keeping a closer eye on things that I would've been otherwise.
4.0, about 10 months or so, I think.

Sure, but how many months? 3 months is a lot different from 8 months or
10 months, even if it doesn't get anywhere near the 18 month advance
warning that Hero Games has just issued about 6th edition.

Do you remember the publication month?

Thanks.

It was also a half-edition. 3.5 was largely the same game as 3.0, and
many people were already doing alot of the things 3.5 changed anyway.

In fact, I think it might've been about eight months. I'm pretty sure I
heard about it in the fall or late fall.

End of July, IIRC. I bought my van in August, after attending
GenCon2003, which is when the 3.5 books hit the street.
