My current gaming rig is getting a bit long in the tooth (3 yo) but
still runs everything I've tried on it lately. Only problem is that
the graphics card I have (well, had) for it died recently. I stuck in
an older card which works great but I can no longer run some newer
games.
So, while I decide whether to just build a whole new rig I thought I'd
check out what is available for AGP cards. Unfortunately there aren't
any reviews of them more recent than a couple years ago.
So, what are some current AGP cards to consider that are up to the
task of running recent games? >> Stay informed about: AGP graphics cards |

Hope u don't mind temp changing subject slightly, but speaking of AGP
graphic cards, I have simple AGP Radeon 9250 128mb, and am using it
inside Win98 box. Quick question - if I upgraded to 256mb version,
would this be a complete waste seeing as it's only used for Win98 (and
older) games only.
Thanks, regards, Robert.

The monthly list of "The Best Gaming Graphics Cards for the Money"
on Tom's Hardware is probably best source of current information on
AGP cards:
http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/03/05/the_best_gaming_graphics/
The current list suggests, in increasing order of price and performance,
either the Radeon HD 2600 Pro or XT, the X1950 Pro or the HD 3850.
NVIDIA seems to have exited the AGP market. The Radeon HD 3850 is high
end card that should perform well with any current game, although your
CPU may not. The other cards are midrange cards that might be lacking
for some games. If you see any other AGP cards available at your local
store or on the WWW, you can compare their relative performance using
the chart at the end of the article.

DO ! carefully check your Power Supplies output capability.
the most recent graphic cards eat a lot more power than those of a few years
back.

I can't see more video RAM significantly improving the performance of
any game that would run better than slideshow speeds on a Radeon 9250.

ATI X1950Pro 512Mb - there is no substitute.

C'mon guys, stop with the non-sense - the X1950 was king of the hill maybe a
year or two ago, but not anymore by a long shot.
There are a couple of AGP cards that'll have it for breakfast and not even
burp afterwards, the best being the HD 3850 of course (DDR3, 512MB, DX10)

Too bad Newegg actually isn't selling that one (it is listed as
"deactivated item"). >> Stay informed about: AGP graphics cards |

Going for $220. They've got a X1950Pro going for $153 (with $20 Mail-In
Rebate), so it's hardly a fair comparison. About 40-50% more bang for
40-50% more buck, meh.

Hmmm - compared it with mine on Tom's Hardware comparison chart, and
it tests about 5 times faster in Oblivion...
Guess I'm off shopping at the end of the month.
Thanks for the advice, guys. >> Stay informed about: AGP graphics cards |

The X1950 goes for about £120 here in the UK - I'll shpo around for
the lowest price when I get paid.

I think it's last year's graphic cards that eat a lot more power
(particularly the HD2900XT, I think), whereas the HD3850 and HD3870
aren't all that bad. Depending on what you do, though. Idle, they're
among the most frugal dedicated graphic cards out there, but on full
load, they can still draw as much as any other card. But at least
they don't waste your money ans rise the sea levels while drawing the
desktop, like many other cards do.
