Hello All,

I am a new ADOM player. I have beaten Nethack and Angband and I decided to
investigate it out of couriosity. It's hard to say why I've never played
ADOM before, since I am a huge fan of Nethack. ADOM is a very interesting
game, and I am finding it quite enjoyable, especially the skills and the
quests.

I do have a few questions: what happens if I my character is illeterate?
Can he go through the whole game not reading a single scroll? How do I
uncurse an item? Is it safer just to avoid wearing strange items? And
finally, what kinds of foods can I eat? I tried to follow Nethack
guidelines while eating in ADOM and it didn't work out. Any advice would be
greatly appreciated.

Regards,

John

Of course you know about the guidebook (tm), and therefore you are
asking because you do not want to be spoiled. Ill keep my answers
intentionally vague, then.

> what happens if I my character is illeterate?
> Can he go through the whole game not reading a single scroll?

He could, yes. But it can be learned as he goes along. If you play the
game with a normal progression (do the areas you are supposed to) you
will surely find out one way.

> How do I uncurse an item?

Again several methods. One would be connected with your first
question, the others would be connected with divine powers.

> Is it safer just to avoid wearing strange items?

That depends. With any starting character I would wear a, say, mithril
chain mail right away, even if I knew it was cursed. Or, say, an
adamantium cap. This because they provide armor boni, and I can rely
on being able to uncurse/bless them later on. Weapons I would mabye be
a bit more careful with. If you start with a nice sword, then decide
to wield a dagger (most are 1d4) and it is cursed, well then you will
have some problems in the early game. There are ways to get rid of
cursed weapons though, if you pick your right fight.

> And finally, what kinds of foods can I eat?

Iron rations come in two sizes, but weigh a lot. All food generated is
okay to eat (melon, apple, dwarven sausage, raw meat...). You might
find a food-court later on. But to survive you probably need to learn
to eat corpses too. As in nethack, you can gain powers by eating
certain corpses. None give a direct level-up though...you have to work
for that yourself. But it is hugely important to "learn your corpses"
to become asuccessful winning player. As a general guide, try to
imagine yourself in the place of your adventurer. Would YOU eat that?
(or someone in the world). If not, then don't. Zombie? Rotting heap of
dead flesh? Sounds spoiled to me. Make your list, try different
corpses, make a note of the ones that give messages of effects you
suspect mean something. Getting sick is a sure sign of a no-no.

If your character is illiterate he can't read anything, but reading is not
required to win ADOM one way or another.

>How do I uncurse an item? Is it safer just to avoid wearing strange items?

Dipping (!) them into holy water or reading scroll of uncursing are two
common ways.

>And finally, what kinds of foods can I eat?

Don't eat koblins, you'll get sick. Some monsters are poisonous and not to
be eaten, name & monster memory will tell much about corpse. Rations, fruits
and meat are safe ways to keep you fed. And maybe some herb too...

Hope that helps and welcome to ADOM community!

Thanks for the help, you guys! Lately I've been playing human
Elementalists. I like playing human because they are considered "normal"
stat-wise in most rogue-likes. Elementalists are a neat idea because they
don't have to rely on books for spells. Are there any disadvantages
compared to a wizard? I remember it was a pain being a wizard in Nethack,
so I never bothered.

Ah, thank you, those were my intentions Wink

Also, is there a way to increase the size of the window? I'm afraid the
tiny ADOM window is giving me bad eyesight.

Regards,

John

You can play full screen, but IMO your best option is ADOM Sage
frontend (www.jbc.edu/~josh/adom-sage/). Apart from giving you more
freedom in manipulating how the window/fonts look, it has a number of
neat options such as color-coded messages for various events so that you
do not miss them, automatic swap of places with non-hostile monsters in
towns etc.

Have fun. I've been throughly spoiled by the guidebook, so perhaps I do
not remember correctly, but I believe there is very little info on
alignment/gods/altars in the manual. This is an important part of the
game, so take not what is happening and try figure it out. Remember you
can pray for all sorts of things, provided you're in good standing with
your God.

Wizards are not a pain (at least to my eyes) in ADOM.
Elementalists start with spells, but always the same
ones. Burning hands and frost bolt, then fire bolt
later and so on. Wizards always start with two
spellbooks, at least one of which is gauranteed to
be offensive. The other book may not be offensive,
but helpful in other ways.

Wizards have a slightly higher learning stat to start
out, and their literacy skill always starts out at
100. Wizards can always train their Concentration
skill much more quickly than elementalists (helps to
restore your PP's). All of these things help wizards
to learn more from the books they have.

Humans aren't that great in ADOM actually, because they're so average. They
have no special advantages like the other races all do. I'd encourage you
to play about a bit and get a feel for what you like best (personally I
prefer gnomes and drakelings, for various reasons). Generally wizards are
considered better than elementalists, since they find a lot of spellbooks
around and can gain a huge magical arsenal. Elementalists are a bit more
restricted, but can be easier to use for a new player since they'll almost
never run out of offensive magic in the early game.

Wizards can also start with 3 spellbooks.

Elementalist are a good choice IMO, as they don't get too easy towards the
late game, as wizards certainly do. I managed an only win with one, and it
was near-death experience for almost entire game.
