There are 344 uniquely-named cards.
However, there's a separate collector's number for each of the 4
versions of art for each of the basic lands. Also, there are some
cards "in the set" that are only available through the Core Game
starting kit, numbered S1 through S9 I believe. So, there are 350
different cards (again, treating the differing basic land art as a new
card) you could get in a booster pack, which is where the 350 number
comes from.
Unique cards taking out basic lands: 344 - 5 = 339
Taking out the S1-S9 set: 339 - 9 = 330
Adding the 4 types of art for each basic land: 330 + (4 * 5) = 350

The summer of 2007, I believe. They've been in the habit of releasing
a new core set every 2 years.
