Yesterday I ran the fan-made Raiders of Oakhurst:

http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=220317

using the D&D Experience sample characters:

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/ExperienceCharacters.zip

Some quick comments:

Fun, but not spectacularly so.

The characters distinctly felt more powerful than in 3E (unlike in SWSE,
where they felt about as powerful, only more durable).

We didn't have a grid, and I missed it much more than I did the several
times I ran 3E without it.

The dragon (4th-level solo) was a bit much, but they managed to get it
to 25% hp before I had it retreat.

People really need to be on top of what the can do with their minor,
move and standard action.

We kept forgetting ongoing damage and the save to end it.

I still don't like the paladin's Divine Challenge and the cleric's at-wills.

I think the comments are true; 4E really does need a grid if you're to
play it properly.
