All GMs I've ever met use house rules. It's just that some of them
don't know it.

And the good ones that know it write them up and give them to their
players.

The killer for me was always checkmate. The dogmatism about that rule
makes Nightmare Chess (Steve Jackson published some cards for use on top
of a chess game) very, very, hard to implement. If you could just play
"until king is captured", about half the rule complexity of NMC would
disappear -- but the chess people can't *imagine* how you could play that.

Yes, and there's usually a bunch of other rules I like that no one
seems to play with (I like auctions).

I saw somewhere that 90% of people play monopoly without the
auctions, something about being taught as a kid and parents not wanting
to out-think their kids into a defeat.

The chess people have always tinkered, you must just hang out with
the wrong crowd. Hell, all the special moves in chess are just old house
rules that have crept into the game.
It wouldn't surprise me to see Fischer Random Chess take over the
tourniments in time, as people can still kick the computer's ass there.

And the bad ones announce that there are house rules, more house rules will
be developed in play but the players and characters don't get to know what
those house rules are. Ever.

Ouch. I had a DM like that once. (Well, actually a GM since this was
Fantasy Hero instead of D&D, but the principle is the same.) About 3
weeks prior to the start of a campaign I designed a magic-using
character per FH RAW. It was rejected because it violated a House
Rule on the way magic was played in that campaign. So I asked to be
given a description of how magic was played. No response. I remade
the character to take into account that first House Rule. Rejected -
it violated another House Rule on magic. Again a request to have the
magic system in use described, again no reply. Time was running out
for the campaign to begin, so I made up an absolutely plain vanilla
character that only had the POTENTIAL to later become a mage. The
character was allowed in - but further requests to be given a
description of the actual magic system continued to be ignored. After
a couple of playing sessions I parted company with that GM -
permanently.

At the time I left, I made a wager with some people regarding how long
it would take before the GM made her House Rules available to the
players. I stated that they could set up any INTERVAL in the pool
they liked - but that I would take the longest slot. They chose 6
month intervals. So one person got 0-6 months, another got 6-12 and
so on. With 7 people in this pool, I got "over 3 years".

Sure enough, 3 years later I collected. The House Rules STILL hadn't
been given to the players. (Of course, the campaign as a campaign
hadn't lasted the 3 years - with that style of GM, really no
surprise.)

This is really a departure from the proposed topic, but I never liked
Monopoly because there is no graceful way to lose. The only way you
win that game is by crushing defeat. After a while, if you're good at
the game, no one wants to play with you. At least, that's what I
found.

There is a variant out there called "Illuminopoly" where someone has
hybridised the Monopoly rules with the Steve Jackson game
"Illuminati". Now THAT is a game that's some serious fun. I highly
recommend giving it a whirl at your next gaming session!!

That sounds fun, especially since I own both Wink

Strange Days these... I can't find anyone to play monopoly (or any
boardgames) with, but being a DM in one game and playing in another, I
feel like I'm playing D&D too much!

Well my favorite boardgames are Dungeon! which I do own, and Talisman
which I don't own. Both of those are in their own way board game
versions of D&D anyway Smile

Most of the roleplayers I know prefer European-style board games like
Carcassone, Settlers of Catan, and Twilight Imperium to the American-style
board games like Monopoly. We have a few Euro board gaming get-togethers in
Sydney, for instance.

Me, I don't like either kind of board game. Wink They're just not fun for me.

So is Doomquest, but it's more like D&D with a killer DM.

My family only recently started using the auctions rule in a monopoly
- and I have been playing since the 1970's.

They do however do seem more resistant to my house rule "Throw a
double three times in a row and go to prison. If you do not have a get
out of jail free card, Demogorgon appears and bums you"
