Well, you can use the built in emotes to communicate with the other side.
There's also quest-givers that seem able to talk to players of both sides.
I wish the emote system was a bit more robust for communicating ideas
(things you could obviously do in real life like 1-10, etc).
I also wish they had made it so you COULD learn the other side's languages
if you wanted to invest significantly in it. Such as a profession. That
would (hopefully) deter some of the trash-talkers. >> Stay informed about: [40k] 5th Ed soon to be released? |

may I take a moment to nitpick? thanks, cos I do so love to:
most roman soldiers (or sailors for that matter) would've been able to get
by in greek. it was certainly far more widely used amongst citizens of the
empire than latin - even if they didn't speak it already, anyone posted to
the eastern empire would've picked up the basics very quickly, or gotten
extremely hungry, cold and pissed off. it was also probably well
established in the west, since the bulk of the roman empire's merchant class
was, in fact, comprised of greeks and native speakers from the eastern
islands. in nearly all of the mediterranean territories, roman officials
and the majority of their subjects wouldn't have been fluent in each other's
languages, but they both spoke greek and consequently most everyday business
would've been conducted in greek.
ahhhh, that's better (cue comical rubbery noise of sphincter unclenching) >> Stay informed about: [40k] 5th Ed soon to be released? |

Of course. Wouldn't dare to stop you even if I could.
<shrug>
Notice I put both 'latin' and 'greek' in elipses... neither language existed
in their modern form in the period under discussion. In truth, a Macedonian
from Pella wasn't even considered a Greek at all - at least not so by a
citizen of Athens or Thebes.
>
> most roman soldiers (or sailors for that matter) would've been able to get

You're absolutely right. But I had originally meant to use the phrase 'it's
all greek to me' somewhere in my text to indicate language confusion but
couldn't manage to fit it in. So the roman vs macedonian example was used.
I could have just as well said Muscovite vs Tartar, Turk vs Byzantine,
Macedonian vs Indian, Mohawk vs American colonist, etc
It's also equally true the the Roman empire recruited it's legions from the
length and breath of it's empire. And legions recruited in Spain were sent
to the German frontier for service along the Danube. And legions made-up of
soldiers from the middle east found their way to the far north of britan
manning Hadrians wall. In no small measure this was done to prevent the
soldiers from fraternizing and sympathizing with the civilian population -
this was a lesson hard learned when Belgic tribesmen IIRC revolted and were
promtly joined in revolt by legions composed of Germans from the nearby
area.
