Archived from groups: rec>games>miniatures>warhammer (more info?)

A fellow Ork player and I decided we'd have a friendly little Ork on Ork
game. Not wanting to tilt the action we both brought our best guess at
what might make a good tourney list.

The 2000 point lists were as follows.

His:

Warboss on Bike, PK
Big Mek, Shock Attack Gun
30 Orks, Shootas, Nob w/ PK
20 Orks, Choppas, Nob w/ PK
12 Orks, Choppas, Nob w/ PK, Trukk
12 Orks, Choppas, Nob w/ PK, Trukk
14 Lootas
Battlewagon, 'Ard Case, Kill Kannon, Big Shootas x2
Battlewagon, Big Shootas x4
3 Killa Kans w/Grotzooka
14 Stormboyz, Nob w/PK
2 Wartrakks w/ TL Rokkits
Buggy w/TL Rokkits

Mine:

Warboss on Bike, PK
Big Mek, Shock Attack Gun
30 Orks, Shootas, Nob w/ PK
Deff Dread, Big Shoota x2
15 Lootas
15 Lootas
5 Burna Boyz w/3 Meks w/Big Shootas
3 Killa Kans w/Kustom Mega Blasta
2 Looted Wagons, Boomgun, Big Shoota, one w/'Ard Case
20 Stormboyz, Nob w/PK
3 Wartrakks w/ TL Rokkits
2 Deff Koptas

We rolled up the Seek and Destroy mission at Gamma level. The game table
had 25% covered by ruins and trees, arranged with scattered ruins from
the left to center creating a town square lined with buildings. The
trees forming a wood from my board edge to his on the right, effectively
blocking line of sight between us.

From left to right my opponent deployed his Buggy, Kans, Lootas and Big
Mek in buildings with the Killkannon Battlewagon right outside, Trakks,
Mob of 30 on foot behind the woods and the other Battlewagon w/20 Boyz
inside and the Warboss along with two Trukkboyz units behind it. The
Stormboyz hid behind a building.

From left to right I deployed Looted Wagon, Lootas, more Lootas, Looted
Wagon, Trakks and Kans in or behind buildings. The Burna Boy Meks were
directly behind the Kans to provide repairs if needed. The Boyz mob
countered his Boyz behind my side of the trees along with the Warboss,
Deff Dread, Deff Koptas and Stormboyz. The Big Mek stood defiantly in
the open on the extreme right board edge taking advantage of a firing
lane across the back side of the trees as well as up the right side of it.

My Deff Koptas slipped through the trees, lining up for a pop up
maneuver on the forces that lay behind.

I won the first turn and decided to go first.

Turn One:
My Killa Kans stepped up behind a building on the right of the square,
closing with the enemy under cover. My Trakks roared forward and lined
up on the enemy Trakks. My Boyz on foot slogged forward, looking for
targets but not finding any, as did the Deff Dread. The Stormboyz
advanced on foot, disciplined and waiting for the enemy to get within
range of their charge. The Warboss turbo boosted left to reinforce the
center of the board. The Deff Koptas jumped over the woods looking for
targets.

The first Lootas mob got 1 shot per and opened up on the Kans across the
square from them. They got lucky and made 8 hits and immobilized two
Kans as well as stunning one. The other Lootas rolled up three shots
each (45 shots!) and engaged the enemy Lootas. Despite their hard cover
half their number disappeared in a gout of fire. The first Looted Wagon
targeted the Buggy and did not scatter with it's Boomgun. All that
remained was a crater. The second Looted Wagon lined its sights up on
the Battlewagon across the square and managed a glancing hit! Alas, it
would only shake the Battlewagon. The Wartrakks fired on the enemy
Buggies, their Rokkits all hit and the two opposing Trakks both were
destroyed. The Koptas fired at the Battlewagon, but their Rokkits all
spun wildly out of control.

My opponent countered by running all his troops including the occupied
Battlewagon, Trukks and Warboss forward through the trees. His Kannon
armed wagon, shaken but not knocked out, advanced across the square
crushing the Wartrakk wreckage beneath it's own tracks. The leftmost
tree line had an opening and three Big Shootas sighted targets. His
Stormboyz went to my right to run around the square. The Warboss
advanced into the copse of woods beneath my Deff Koptas.

His shooting consisted of his remaining Lootas firing at the leftmost
Looted Wagon which they managed to destroy. The Big Mek's SAG scattered
off the right hand Wagon. Three Big Shootas found only one of my Orks
for a target, and he died an Orky death.

The Warboss engaged the Deff Koptas, deftly swatting them from the sky
with his Power Klaw.

Turn Two:
My Wartrakks dove for cover in a building to the right of the square,
directly in front of the Killa Kans. The Kans along with their Burna Mek
escorts moved right a little to head of the swarm of Boyz threatening
the board center. My Warboss advanced on the enemy Battlewagon that was
half way across the square, hugging cover. The Boyz advanced into the
wood looking for Green targets, along with the Deff Dread. The Stormboyz
leaped across the trees, getting an extra 5 inches of movement from
their Rokkit packs. They staged a charge on the enemy Warboss. The
Looted Wagons, Lootas and Big Mek held their ground.

My remaining Looted Wagon fired at the Battlewagon across from them. A
hit but to no effect. AV14 is still nothing to sneeze at! The Lootas to
the left rolled 3 hits each, and 45 Deffgun shots later the opposing Ork
Lootas were no more. My second Lootas squad rolled one shot each but it
was still enough to finish off my opponents Killa Kans. The three
Wartrakks in the building shot all their Rokkits at the Battlewagon,
only one finding it's mark and to no effect. On the right the Boyz shot
back at the Ork mob across the woods, and managed to kill two. The
Stormboyz shot their Sluggas at the Warboss to no effect.

The Stormboyz charged and managed to put a single wound on the enemy
Warboss but suffered three casualties in return. Their numbers strong,
they continued the fight.

My enemy's turn saw all of his Boyz surging forward. His near 30 strong
Boyz mob met mine in the middle of the woods. His Stormboyz flew towards
my Warboss. The Trukkboyz advanced towards my Stormboyz in a bid to come
to their Warboss' aid. The remaining Battlewagon advanced and disgorged
twenty Slugga Boyz inches from my Boyz mob.

During his shooting his Killkannon found a mark in one of my Looted
Wagons. The shot did not scatter and the Wagon exploded. The other
Battlewagon drew a bead on the Wartrakks in the building. With 12 Big
Shootas and two Rokkits from Trukks the Wartrakks were toast. In the
middle a couple more Ork Boyz died. The Big Mek's SAG again drifted off
target.

His assault phase was another matter. The now 20 something Shoota Boyz
squad of his managed to get five of it's number into base with my Boyz,
as did his Sluggas. The Nob also managed to touch the bases of one of my
Killa Kans, effectively tying it up. The enemy Sluggas hit mine. The
enemy Stormboyz swarmed my solitary Warboss. The combats were a riot
with about 78 attacks being thrown by the charging Slugga Boyz. Dice by
the handfuls were thrown to hit, wound and save. Only our relatively
high T4 managed to keep my own ladz alive. Ten friendly Orks, a Kan, and
half a dozen Stormboyz of mine died with six enemy Orks dying. His
Warboss was undamaged.

Turn Three:

My Deff Dread advanced towards the scrum in the middle. Everyone else
was either staying put to shoot or already engaged in HTH.

On the left flank targets were hard for me to find. The one Lootas squad
that had LOS to the Big Mek rolled one shot each, and only two managed
to hit. Both hits were saved thanks to his 4+ cover. The
Deff Dread got shots at the back of the Battlewagon and failed to
damage. The Big Mek was too far back to draw LOS so advanced.

Combat saw the enemy Boss and his Boyz backup wipe out my Stormboyz.
They advanced towards the bigger fight in the middle. More death and
dice by the handfuls in the big scrum. My Boyz put up a valiant
struggle, but it was clear that near 50 enemy Orks against my 30 was not
going to lose. I had barely 12 Orks left when the dust had settled,
despite putting almost as many casualties out as we received.

During his movement, his Battlewagon wheeled about and Tank Shocked my
Deff Dread. The Dread Death or Gloried the Battlewagon, and found Death
and got smashed beneath the Deff Rolla. The Big Shootas on the BW then
found the Big Mek a most inviting target, and gunned him down.

After the assault phase there was little left of my Boyz. We called the
game at that point.

Post game analysis:

Lootas rule. There was little they saw that didn't die.

PK Warboss on a Bike is most useful. Seems like a good tank killer,
counter charge and rear lines mayhem unit.

I need more Boyz in this list. What won the game for my opponent was
having superior numbers to soak up wounds in CC.

The Trukk Boyz is alive and well. ult of Speed still seems to be a
viable list.

Deff Koptas... not so sure. They seem OK but died awfully quickly. The
hit and run rule didn't help. Expensive for what I got. Buggies would be
more useful.

Big Meks with SAG seem to under perform. Sure, it's Ordnance; sure, it's
the big pie plate. But half the time you get S7 or less and it still
scatters. If you do take one, make him cheap. The problem is there are
so many good Ork HQ units you will rarely have need of filling a cheap
HQ slot.

I'd like to try this list against other armies. So far it's only been
Drop Marines, Drop RIG and Orks. The Drop armies had predictable
results. They had enough numbers that they were able to get units on the
board every turn, in the places they wanted them, to pick me apart.
Orks, well that's another end of the extreme.

Yay Deffgunz!

Gotta love getting first turn.

Ah, yes. The Going Second Blues.

Both Koptas were smacked down by one Unit? Bummer.

I'm sensing a pattern . . .

Well, it's official. MVPs = Lootas.

Ouchie. That'll leave a mark.

Yowch. And he started with just 15 more Infantry models. :- \

You mean Deff? :- P [cue Last Post]

That, and he didn't take Dreadz, Burnaz or Koptaz . . .

Lots: Red/ Armour/ Rokkits.

Kinda pricey. Nice model, though.

Sorry, but to my mind, Orks have no *outstanding* HQ choices.
Yes, some are good, but they're commensurately costed.
The Units unlocked by ICs aren't the best, either.
One HQ = more boots (Wounds) in the Troops slot.

I'd say, drop the Big Mek for more Boyz.
About fifteen . . .

The Dread didn't turn in a stellar performance, either.

Now, a couple questions:

Why even bother to take just five Burna Boyz?
How many PK attacks made any difference in the end?

> I'd like to try this list against other armies

Or just try a different Mission against the same army -
Frankly, S&D isn't much of a scenario at 2kpt.
I'd have asked for a reroll.

Thanks for the report.
Keep 'em coming.

The SAG model is a very nice model... and I have a soft spot for the
Death Skullz. It just doesn't seem like a Skullz army without a Big Mek.

> The Dread didn't turn in a stellar performance, either.

That's true, but the very threat of the Dread caused attention to be
turned from other areas and prevented a flank move by my opponent. At
100 points it wasn't a bad choice. Nothing is going to stand up to D6
S10 hits...

Ah the Burna Boyz. I didn't take them for the Burnas, I took them for
the Meks. You can put three Meks in the squad... one for each Killa Kan.
They had Big Shootas so could put out a little Dakka firing between the
Kans and provide repair if needed. Three Big Shootas, two Burnas and
three repair rolls for 90 points. A bargain.

Of course this is another 15 Boyz, so maybe not the bargain I *needed*.

Thanks for the kind words. I'll be playing Necrons shortly so we'll see
how the MEQ handle this list. Those Monoliths are going to be a problem...

Oh yes. Now of course they present a great conversion opportunity as
well. Cram as many barrels and clips as you can onto a largish gun body
and it could make a great Deff Gun. I have left over Lootas from 3rd
Edition toting Lascannons, Missle Launchers and such and they make
perfectly fine Lootas.

They are nice. My Warboss rides a custom monstrosity consisting of a
Chaos bike rear wheel and chassis, V8 engine and tranny comprising the
body of the bike with a new Ork warbike front end and suspension.

Been thinking about a Nob Biker guard for him to add a few more PK to
the mix. <evin grin>

Not a lot of hope there... they still market the old Wartrakk with their
weedy little drivers and gunners. I did manage to pick up some 1/35
scale muscle cars to use as buggies though. My Orks will be driving a
Mad Max-ed 69 Camaro Z28 and 70 Mustang Mach 1 for buggies soon.

The model is fantastic! That's what makes this one an even sadder
situation. If the model was a POS it would be easy to leave it out, but
the Shokk Attack Gun just looks so cool!

Thanks for the nice comments. I'll be posting up more to report upcoming
Necron and Space Marine games.
