[40K] Help me out with me SM.

Well as I've been painting marines I thought I might even go a bit crazy
and possibly play one of my staff. Now I'm not going to go crazy enough
to run out and buy the latest rulebook and codices so i could do with a
little bit of help.

My colour scheme is going to be WII German cammo dark green for standard
troopers with brown back packs. Elites will be WWII German Cammo Beige
(tinted will almost be bone). Vehicles will be something like a
combination of cammo dark green and black.

Now what I need help with is a general force composition so I can glue on
the appropriate weapons to make up squads. Now I don't have any problems
with squads of six or eight. If I were to keep developing this army I'd
put as many squads as possible in Rhinos or Razorbacks so the army was
mobile - more for thematic reasons. Why the hell would the galaxy's
elite soldiers walk everywhere?

Anyway I finished my count of marines here it is, anyone with some ideas?

OK, it's nice to have Special Characters for painting but not
super-playable. I ignore them.

I'd field:

1x 6 Command w/ 2 Plasma Cannon, Apothecary.
2x 10 Tac w/ Lascannon, Melta, Veteran w/ PF in Rhino
1x 6 Tac w/ ML
1x 6 Dev w/ 4 HB.

Ignore - too expensive.

Goes with the other Land Speeder. OK, this is one Fast Attack slot done.

Meh.

As with the other Heroes.

Ignore - too specialized & expensive.

But as you need to spend points, I'd make a squad of 5 or 6 Termies with
2 Assault Cannons.

Field these as a cheap Troops pick to grab a corner.

> Free Company Crusaders

Ignore - not Marines.


You have problems:

No Special Weapons.
No Assault capability.
Low Mobility.

They don't, they just park their rhinos outside the battle zones. Wouldn't
want their pimped out rides to get scuffed up ya know.

Start with troop choices. The five scouts make one. Put together two tac
squads of 10 guys with 1 Hvy weapon and 1 Assault weapon each to go in the
rhinos. That'll give you 3 troop choices and a solid base for your army.
Organize the rest of your ground pounders into tac squads of 5-7 guys with 1
Hvy and 1 Assault each up to a total of 6 squads as your troop choices.

The speeders can go as a single squadron or two separate Fast Attack
choices. Speeder with Assault Cannon + Hvy Bolter is best but multi-melta
if a good option too. Bikes and attack bikes aren't bad but speeders are
better. I'd go with Hvy Bolter on the attack bike since it works well with
the twin bolters.

After that see what's left and decide what to swap around into Devastators
or Elite retinues.

As you have the points and the models, this should be split into 2 squads:
- 5 Devs w/ 2 Lascannons in twin HB Razorback.
- 5 Devs w/ 2 Plasma Cannon.

The Lascannons are marginally better to move up to the Tactical Squads
to concentrate the HB fire:
- 5 Devs w/ 2 Heavy Bolters in twin HB Razorback.

If you have the Apothecary model, even better. Do this:
- Master
- 5 Command Squad w/ 2 Plasma Cannon & Apothecary.

Perfectly fine.

As you have the Fast slots, split them into individuals. You can hide

Good point. I've been thinking that I'll put together all of the Heavy
weapons and possibly pick up some more models for fillers. maybe some
older metal marines.

I suppose I just have this mental block with LC & PCs in tactical squads.
They just look too damn big to be deployed into any thing that may
resemble close combat. Smile

Yep, default is Assault Cannon and CCW w/built in stom bolter (this is the
combo I use most). You can replace the CCW with a missile launcher and the
Ass Can with Twin-Lascannons or a Multi-Melta.

I usually have 1 or 2 Tac squads of 5-6 guys with a Lascannon and Plasma
Gun. I just have them sit in my deployment area the whole time and plink
away at tanks at the start of the game and then shoot any troops that get
within 24" later in the game. They're fairly cheap and do a decent job of
popping vehicles and keeping the bad guys away from my side of the board.

This looks quite good, tho you don't really need the Standard or
Veteran. I'd just take generic bullet-catchers. You always need to
remember that, in 40k, the enemy shoots back! Anywhere from 1/3 to 2/3
of the models should be designated bullet-catchers.

This army should play pretty well in 1500 pts. It's a little static,
but has good numbers, flexibility, and decent firepower / mobility.
It'd be a fairly tough nut to crack. You should have fun playing it.
