I'm trying to find an older version of XMAME for a friend of mine
running Ubuntu. All the games he wants to play are in version .36,
which I have, but for the /life/ of me, I can't find anything older than
..86. Can one of you help me out?
(BTW, which is faster; SDL or SVGA?)

<SIGH> I guess I should have specified; he is probably the /last/
person who would be compiling anything, and I don't have the time. If
someone would be willing to put together a .deb for him, I would be
grateful.

Debian does offer binaries which may work with some distros.
i think linux MAME (and DOS MAME) are slow compared to Win MAME.
sometimes compiling is as simple as
wget http:whatever.com/program.bz2
tar -jxvf program.bz2
cd program
..configure
make
make install
i did have to add some command line options when compiling MAME.

Not (too) old versions.

In my Windows times DOS was fastest, then XMAME (using SVGA), then
Win32. But I had a slow computer (still have .

Better tell the Makefile of your rom path(s) and $XMAMEROOT.
Anyway, thanks Sinner, will downgrade to some older version anyway in
lack of up to date roms. I guess something in the 60s (.65?) would be a
good compromise between running my old roms and get some of the "newer"
features.

true. i remember i had to make a couple of minor changes and tell it to use
SDL or something. it was easy, but not as easy as "rpm -ivh whatever" or
click and run.

../configure is not required for xmame, but some editing of the makefile is
mandatory.

I tried to compile and I am having issues and I am not that motivated to
dig much deeper than I have, sorry.

No problem. He seems to be happy enough with MAME v.106 & ROMs v.036
(and, no, I am /not/ going to redo them for him. I'm leaving town,
probably on Sunday, and don't have the time.) Most of them work, anyhow.

Of course you have to. A man should have once planted a tree, built a
house and compiled xmame in his life!

I have compiled Xmame and windows mame enough times to have that covered.
If I built a house, not even I would dare move in and I have paid people to
plant trees, in Israel even!
