I've only used 32 because I'm not a computer genius, what are the
differences between this and dos? what are the advantages/disadvantages
of each? It seems a lot easier to me to just click on a title than
enter from a dos prompt....

there is command line MAME (windows program),
command line DOS MAME (DOS program),
MAME32, and commandline MAME plus graphical front end.

i think that's most of the MAME variants.

to complicate matters, some DOS programs will only run in DOS mode or under
emulation or something. you can't run a true Windows program from DOS mode
(or older non-windows DOS). you can run a Windows program without the
shell, so it's possible to have a MAME cabinet that doesn't look much like
Windows.

sorry i'm not good at explaining things.

starting from the command line is pretty easy, but not good for kids or
newbie users. "mamepp -video ddraw -joy -nohwstetch galaxian" being an
example. my ~ 8 year old nephews were able to learn this though.

have you tried EasyMAME? it's pretty decent, but not powerful enough for
me. i haven't tried MAME32.

I use MAME for DOS whenever possible because the games run more
smoothly. I need the extra speed as my computer is slow. The major
problem with mame for dos is that I can't always get the games at the
right resolution. Note that there is a difference between MAME for DOS
and the standard version of MAME which runs in a console window but
isn't a true MS-DOS application.

Try MAMEPLUS. It's an offshoot of MAME32. The games seem to run with
a bit more zip, and you still get the graphical interface.

For simple desktop play, go with MAME32. If you are using a cabinet or
want a special front end, go with a commandline version (for DOS or
Windows, or XMAME for Linux). Thats kinda what it boils down to

I personally like Advance MAME (aka ADVMAME) for use on a DOS system.
Runs great on a 766MHz system and will even let you play CPS2 games
full speed. For DOS I use WIN 98SE with the shell turned off
(basically this is DOS 7). Use ADVMenu for the front end to give a
nice grphical interface. You do have to set your resolutions up the
first time around, which can take awhile, but it is worth it.
