Is it possible to play 2nd edition characters in 1st edition modules,
or will the information not be compatible or the encounters not
challanging enough?

As others have said, yes. Some things to keep in mind:

(1) For 1e assassins, replace with 2e fighters or thieves (or perhaps a
slightly lower level fighter/thief)). Because of the fairly short time
between Unearthed Arcana and 2e, you are not likely run run into many
module references to cavaliers, barbarians and thief-acrobats. Bards
are extremely different between the two editions. 1e didn't have much
support of clerics following a particular god and being different
because of it.

(2) Half-orcs were a "core" race in 1e and so are going to be somewhat
common.

(3) Some spells have minor but important differences. If a certain
spell is very important in a module, check the description of it in
both editions to make sure the 2e version makes sense in the situation.
The same for mahic items.

(4) Non-weapon proficiencies were introduced somewhat late in 1e, so
you may need to add NWPs to some characters.

There are certainly other points, but I haven't played 1e or 2e in a
long time.

Yes, and there's no conversion guide.
