Need Hint Myst V

I'm new to the myst series of games. I have myst 5 (end of ages) and we
are stuck at the Lokiam (sp?) island at the 3 lever machine. We think
it's the secret to open the back door, but haven't been able to get it
to do anything.
Can you throw this beginner a bone?

I think I know which one you are on... I will give you gradual hints in case
you don't want the outright solution:


~ If you stand on the plate on the left you're shown something. Check what
it shows you when you are holding the Slate and when you are not.

~ The thing on the left is showing you how many units you weigh.

~ Try to see when the pillar is in such position that it could technically
allow you to get to the top. Then think about how much you and the slate
weighh and what do you need to do to balance the pillar when you're on it.

~ You need to set the devices in such way that they'd be set to
counterweight the pedestal, the Slate and yourself when on the pillar. And
to do that you need to know how much you and the Slate weigh and what's the
weight of the pedestal.

~ The more circles, the more something weighs. But three "double circles" do
not equal one "triple circle."

This puzzle is a different number for each game, so I'm afraid I can't give
you an exact walk through.
