It is always connected with the transportation domes - usually as I exit
one, but sometimes as I am transported.

The first time, the screen went black, but the sound continued (dialogue
from the daughter - can't remember her name). When she had finished, I
couldn't do anything, and had to power-cycle the PC. When it came up, it
said it was recovering from a serious fault in the video driver. I
downloaded a newer driver from the MS site, went back and replayed part of
the gamme, and next time through that point, I not only heard her, but saw
her.

Since then, always to do with the domes, the PC simply boots, usually as I
am coming out of them. It always gives a message about drivers, and I
assume it is still the video driver it means, because it specified that one
the first time. I have been in search of newer and yet newer drivers, and
each time it gets it over the immediate problem, but it always finds another
the next time I use a dome.

The latest message says (I hope this copies OK):

Error type : Windows stop error (A message appears on a blue screen
with error code information)
Solution available? : No (see Next steps)
What does this error mean? : Windows has encountered an error from
which it cannot recover and needs to restart
Cause : Unknown device driver
Computer symptoms : A message appears on a blue screen with error code
information (for example: e.g. 0x0000001E, KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED)
Additional steps for you to take : Important: Please continue to send
error reports so analysts at Microsoft can study and try to correct the
problem as quickly as possible

In fact, there is no blue-screen error - it just boots.

The PC uses an Intel Pentium 4 3.00GHz with 1GB RAM
It uses a VIA/S3G Unichrome Pro IGP chip set. I checked the VIA forum, and
I'm not the only one to have problems with the VIA chips, but they didn't
offer anything there that fixes my problem.

Can anybody suggest anything?

Thanks,

Mike.

You don't download drivers from Microsoft, you should download them from the
manufacturer's website. Since the motherboard in question seems to use an
integrated chipset, go to the motherboard manufacturer's website. Also
ensure you have the latest DirectX... www.microsoft.com/directx

Well, I've downloaded and installed all drivers now from VIA Arena (the
board manufacturer, Elitegroup, just steers you to VIA). I get through most
of the Myst transporters now, but I can't get to the space station. When I
try, I see the 'loading' bar at the bottom of screen, then the PC boots - no
BSOD, no error - it just boots. When it comes up, it says the same as
before - that it is recovering from a serious system fault.

I really believe I have the latest drivers now (just for good measure, I
also updated the disk drivers, Realtek codec drivers (in case it was caused
by a sound fault), the VIA Hyperion Pro driver, V 5.0, and it didn't want
the display driver - said I already had the latest.

The machine still boots. What now? I'm about out of ideas.
